Determining How Much Supplemental Life Insurance You Need
Some worksheets
to help you decide. Do not construe this as financial advice.
Now that the Trust offers
portability of supplemental life insurance,
it's even more critical to assess your needs while you can
take advantage of this benefit. The insurance you elect now
could protect your family during your retirement, or until
you find other employment.
As you determine
your life insurance need, take inventory of your existing life insurance coverage.
If you've reached this worksheet,
you should have an amount of life
insurance coverage you may need to cover your survivors'
needs. Let's see if your life insurance will cover the total
you've calculated, both now while you're actively at work,
and once you leave State service.

*Only supplemental life insurance for members may be ported to term life insurance. The other plans may be converted to whole life insurance.
If you
don't have enough life insurance to protect your family, you
can purchase additional supplemental
life insurance through Prudential during open enrollment.
Remember to include the premiums in your revised budget,
both now, and after you leave State service. You may also
wish to review plan details to make sure that the plans will
cover you in all circumstances. Read each plan
booklet for more detail.
Return
to Calculating your life insurance
needs if you'd like to re-work the numbers. You may want to review the types of life insurance that are available in the marketplace to make sure you're obtaining the right coverage for yourself and your family and then read more about portability.
Supplemental life insurance is available to you through the Union-led Benefits Trust.
