Painful Reminder
Coping with Recurring Feelings of the September 11 Tragedy
The emotional effects of the September 11th terrorist attacks were felt by people everywhere,
from those who were at the scene to others who saw or heard about the attacks on the news.
As the first anniversary of these events approaches, many people may once again feel angry, afraid, helpless or
emotionally numb or suddenly develop other feelings they haven't experienced before.
It's very common, and quite normal, to have such reactions. Here are some ideas and suggestions to help deal with them:
- Understand that, like everything else, these reactions will run their course and you will feel better in time.
- Talk to someone who will listen and allow you to experience your feelings. Be willing to listen to others who need to talk about how they feel.
- Spend time with family and friends. Coping with stressful events is easier when people support each other. Also give yourself time alone if you need it.
- Stick with your everyday routines. Familiar habits can be very comforting.
- Take care of yourself. Take time to rest and eat
well. Exercise can help relieve pent-up feelings and stress.
Avoid drugs and alcohol.
- Get away from the reminders of the event. Turn off the television news reports and distract yourself by doing something you enjoy.
- Take time to grieve and cry if you need to. Letting these feelings out helps you feel better in the long run.
- Keep in mind that everyone responds differently
to situations like these. Respect other people's feelings
and experiences as well as your own.
If you find that you can't stop thinking about the attacks, you are unable to work effectively or important relationships begin to suffer, consider seeking professional counseling.
Asking for help is never a sign of weakness or failure especially in situations that are just too difficult to handle alone.
