Small gifts
These "little somethings" can mean a lot without costing a lot:
- stationery (including stamps and easy-to-grip pens),
- a greeting card sampling,
- a nerfball or other simple indoor exercise equipment,
- personalized return address labels,
- magnifiers, perhaps on a cord to be worn around the neck,
- a bulletin board with family photos,
- large print crossword puzzles,
- flowers and plants (you may offer to purchase plant food, soil, etc.), and
- an automatic card shuffler.
Toys for special needs kids
Don't rely on age suggestions on toy packages as a guide. Frustration, rather than joy, may be the result.
Consider these toys:
- Comforters - nurturing toys, such as teddy bears, fulfill an important function for children
who are chronically ill, have limited mobility, are blind or have other disabilities or conditions.
- Physical developers - toys that help develop muscle movement, eye-hand coordination and
skin sensations are good for children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and attention deficit disorder.
- Creativity promoters - PlaySkool´s Play-Doh and Talking Pay Phone are examples.
- Educational - magnetic numbers and letters are great for helping children learn.
Also, Mattel's Share-A-Smile
Becky offers children in wheelchairs a new role model.
