Special Needs During the Holidays
Finding the right gift is always a challenge, but it is especially so when looking for gifts
for older family members and those with disabilities. Most retailers don't
feature products designed for those with special needs. Working Solutions
has put together a list of gift-giving ideas and resources.
Reading Material
Prepaid subscriptions to favorite magazines, books or newspapers, or large print formatted magazines,
books, or newspapers. Also, books on tape, CD's and videos may be appreciated.
Pets
This gift cannot be a surprise, as you must talk with the recipient first to make sure a new
pet would be a welcome addition. If properly matched to the potential owner, pets can provide many years of companionship. Mature, trained animals
may be available at shelters and may better suit elders. Fish or birds can be a bright spot for someone who stays indoors, but these pets are
not without their own care needs.
Also, as the giver, consider what would might happen to the pet if the person's condition
changes: can you accept the responsibility of pet care? Many animals, especially birds, have very long life spans, and you should develop a
contingency plan if giving a pet.
Gift Certificates
Long distance phone calling cards, video/audio rental (some companies rent via the mail),
household repair or cleaning services, cable TV subscriptions, beauty services, food delivery. Don't forget to include transportation and your
companionship when you get tickets to a play, movie or sports event.
Electronics / Appliances
Telephones with large numbers or special devices (i.e., for people with hearing aids). A cordless
phone can provide a sense of security, but may be more difficult to operate.
TVs, radios, VCRs, CD or cassette players with easy-to-read buttons and special devices for
the hearing- or sight-impaired. Offer to transfer family movies or slides to videotape - a wonderful gift with a play-only VCR.
Appliances with automatic shut-offs and easy-to-use buttons may also be appreciated.
Clothing
Comfortable, casual, warm and easy-to-wear clothing is a thoughtful gift idea for an older
or disabled person.
